The Challenge

A few years ago I had a client in the paper industry who did want to build new facilities and had never done this before. So we had to find out who can do what, when, what else will be needed…

Before we went into an offsite session that took 3 days, the CEO, the Host and I sat together to gather the Boards Strategic Vision and then took it from here towards a successful offsite session to the years to come ….

The Steps
  1. The collective was pre-determined by the upper management, on purpose composed of active representatives of each department.
  2. The vision was laid out in and communicated via an interactive presentation.
  3. Strengths & weaknesses of the resources were identified.
  4. The collective’s input was compiled.
  5. A consensus-built set of goals, measures and targets was completed.
  6. A variety to plans (such as governance, alignment, resources, timelines, actions) were accomplished.
  7. These plans were submitted to the Management Board to decide on the next steps to be taken.
The Outcome
A plan to manage the strategy & rally the organization around it.

Our contribution ?
Ongoing moderation, counsel and advice to form a collective and ensure adherence to the goal and valuable contribution of each participant. The Host from a psychologists perspective, I from the operations practitioners.

PS : What I remember the most ?

One colleague was appointed who was naturally rather quiet and especially the most eloquent fellows where not really sure, why he got involved. It turned out that he was simply brilliant in many directions, skills (learned) and talents (inherent).

While we run a sometimes heated exchange, he throve to his best and in the end – everyone was impressed about things they could do by themselves and the level of resources they already possessed.

The Young Man indeed came to me, shook my hand and said : “Now I finally know what Project Management is about. Thank you!”
